Imani Wilmont: Surf Girls Jamaica
I was first introduced to Groundswell by Marc Chavez from Native Like Water in November 2022. This was my first time ever hearing about Surf Therapy, and I immediately felt a connection as I now had a name for the work that I was already doing in my community. I thought up the concept for Surf Girls Jamaica when I was a teenager as I was one of the very first girls surfers in Jamaica and was in need of my own community.
Once I met the Groundswell crew I felt an instant sense of belonging to a global family that was supportive and motivated to make a difference in the world one tiny change at a time. The energy and passion I felt reminded me of a younger version of myself in search of healing and of sharing the ocean space with others.
Since my ST Facilitator training in 2022, I have held my own community drop-in sessions, small group sessions and summer camp. I have also been a part of the Waves of Excellence Cohort. I have presented an online talk/training to Groundswell members and have co-facilitated my very first surf therapy retreat and training alongside Groundswell. Groundswell has been one of the highlights of my year and such an amazing experience to now witness others experiencing the beauty of our shared ocean space, overcoming fears, building their own community bonds, and stepping up to be trained in ST Facilitation and continue spreading the stoke around.
quotes from a participant:
“Thank you Imani for holding a safe and playful space for love and growth, and to everyOne for creating such a beautiful gathering” (Olivia W.)
“Such a beautiful day and session. I am grateful for all your hard work and intention. It was a wonderful way to say goodbye to the past year and begin this new one.” (Jessica S.)
“A year ago today my life took a deviation. It has been the most challenging journey I’ve ever had to deal with. I experienced a lot of lows that brought me to my knees. I would say more than an emotional rollercoaster, it has been like an earthquake of feelings, thoughts, vulnerability, tears, surgery, treatments…but today it’s not a sad day. Today those tears are becoming less frequent. I still have some work to improve my emotional well-being. Today is a celebration. Today I am still standing…not still but doing what I like. Outdoors adventures. Reconnecting with the marvellous wonders that the sea always brings, learning how to surf and regaining my strength and my health. Thank you to Imani and Surf Girls Jamaica for offering this amazing experience at a time I needed it.” (Marta L.)
How did your groundswell training/mentorship support your work/program development?
For the past year I have felt absolutely supported by Groundswell, the weekly supervisions, the Waves of Excellence cohort, the numerous resources and materials have all supported me personally and my work by providing a safe, judgement-free and loving space to discuss curriculum, ideas, curiosities, and even my own personal and emotional development.
